Hey dudes, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and had a few questions. I was so anti-Apple until my gf finally forced me to buy the new iPhone 5, and in about two days I wanted to own only Apple products.
I need a new laptop for gaming and everything else (writing/surfing Reddit-not nearly as taxing) and my roommate suggested a MacBook Pro. His points were:.resale value. I could resell the thing for only a few hundred less than the buying price in a year or two and get the newest one. Though I was hesitant to buy a Mac for gaming, he said the processor could easily handle any game out there.
I now own an iPad mini and iPhone 5 so it's sorta logical to get a Mac for a compy. The main question I have for you guys is whether it's worth waiting for the next one. I know they haven't released the specs, but my roommate thinks it's worth waiting a few months because he suspects the new processor is going to blow people away and be top of the line for years. I sort of need one now, but if it's really worth it, I can stand to wait a few more months. Sorry for the wall of text, just trying to find some other opinions.
Thanks so much guys! The MBP can do most high-end games with medium settings on Boot Camp. That should be enough for everyone but the hardcore crowd. There are a ton of YouTube videos showing this off. I would wait 2-4 months because there will be new rMBPs with an even better graphics card and much more processing power. You should do some investigating first before you put down the cash unless you can easily afford it. You may find that the games you're interested in could be run on a Macbook Air or 13' Pro.
I have a 2012 macbook pro with an nvidia GPU and if I run a 3D game for more than about 10 minutes the fans kick up to full speed. I can't help but wonder if yours aren't spinning up on their own because of smcfancontrol. I just can't see it as a good thing to replace firmware control of the fans with software control. Apple knows the thermal profile of the machine, so unless the firmware is buggy, it should be spinning the fans up when it gets hot.
It shouldn't be leaving the fans slow until the GPU has to throttle itself due to thermal load. To be honest, MacBooks are pretty lousy for gaming. All but the most high end ones have integrated graphics, which sucks for running just about every game that requires any kind of advanced graphics. Another big issue is ventilation and heat management. A problem that all laptops built for gaming face is how to cool down all the components inside the laptop. That's why most gaming laptops are pretty thick and heavy.
The Mac is very thin and, as anyone who's ever had a MacBook on their lap can attest for, has very little battery shielding. The thing will get hot and the fans built in aren't really made to handle really intense games. The MacBook Pro is a great computer, but if you want to play games, I suggest buying a desktop PC with proper ventilation, or at the very least a reliable gaming laptop. A standard MacBook can handle simple games like League of Legends relatively well, but anything more than that will be a challenge. As an added note. You said you play AoE2, and that can't run on a Mac either. I personally own a retina 15.
If you want to be able to play games on a mac laptop, you need to get a 15 inch, because they come with the NVIDIA GeForce 650m graphics processor, which can handle your gaming needs rather well. There is a Steam program for Mac, but I honestly partitioned my harddrive so that I can run Windows games on the Mac. If you truly love OS X, and you really want a MacBook Pro, and you love the retina display and just need it, then I recommend getting the 15 and then partitioning some of your harddrive.
That's what you gotta do in order to have gaming potential on it. There are videos on YouTube of people playing games like Arkham City through their 15 inch retina MBPs on Windows through Bootcamp, the program that lets you split the harddrive. I bought this computer because I LOVE Apple products, but I want to be able to game. If you believe that that is worthwhile (as I do), then that's what I recommend you do.
